Movie Review: Ant-Man

“What’s this? A movie review for ANTS?”

I wasn’t expecting much out of Ant-Man. I really wasn’t. Understand that this is coming from a guy who’s seen and enjoyed (to varying degrees) all of the Marvel cinematic universe, but who’s never really read comic books. After I saw Iron Man for the first time, a friend had to explain to me who the Avengers were, and he made mention of Thor. “The actual god Thor?” I asked. “Like, running around with a guy in an iron suit? Marvel Trifecta

So guess whose laptop’s hard drive crashed and evaporated and exploded, leaving its owner kicking himself for not backing up some future blog posts and part of a chapter he’d written? If you guessed Mark Ruffalo’s, you’d be wrong. It’s me! So there may be a bit of a delay in my usual posting while I get things sorted out.

So in the meantime, have this trio of Marvel-related videos that came out this week!

The whole concept of Ant Man continues to give me trouble. I’ve never read the comic, and I’m having difficulty suspending my disbelief. I’ve got no problem with the Hulk, Groot, Rocket, etc., but even if he’s GOT super-strength when he’s that size, he’s got so little mass, it’d be like firing a bullet at a stone wall. But then I didn’t think Thor could work either, and it proved me wrong.

Hulk vs. Iron Man. This does not seem to be a good way to get Hulk to calm down, but I like it anyway!

This is, apparently Iron Man vs. Ultron, but I haven’t actually watched this one, because I don’t want to spoil the ENTIRE movie for myself.

I’ve never been a big reader of comic books. (Hey, I can’t consume EVERYthing!) That said, I’ve really been enjoying the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I honestly have no idea who Ultron is, but this is looking good so far…

I DO know, at least, that what we saw there was Hulkbuster armor… Right?

Hyper-Review: Guardians of the Galaxy

I’m going to make this review quick, and with one (marked & minor) exception, spoiler-free:

I saw Star Wars when I was 7 or 8, when it was re-released in theaters. I no longer remember at all my first viewing, or what it was like. 2/3rds of the way through Guardians of the Galaxy, I realized, “This is what watching Star Wars for the first time must have been like.” Amazing visuals, fantastic characters, a huge sense of fun in a big sci-fi/fantasy package. While I felt some of the character-bonding wasn’t quite earned, that’s a minor flaw, and easily forgiven.
