I’ve been to the Black Lodge… (Review)

February 8, 2015 By Michael G. Munz Leave a Comment

…and it was funny.

Fire Walk With Improv

But let me back up. If you’ve read this blog long enough, you know I love Twin Peaks. I was introduce to it in college, I introduced other people to it, I’ve been to Snoqualmie Falls multiple times, and I’m even a graduate of Twin Peaks High School (a.k.a. Snohomish High School, a.k.a. the school they used when filming Fire Walk With Me). You may also know that I like improv comedy. So when I heard about Seattle improv comedy theater Unexpected Productions putting on a show celebrating Twin Peaks, I grabbed a ticket faster than a one-eyed lady can put up silent drape-runners. Norwescon 38: The Sci-Fi, The Fantasy, and Me!

January 27, 2015 By Michael G. Munz 5 Comments

That sounds like a parody of “The Rainbow Connection” from The Muppet Movie, doesn’t it?

Come see me being all professional and junk.

Come see me being all professional an’ junk.

Norwescon 38 is coming this April! For those of you who don’t know, it’s the Pacific Northwest’s premier science fiction and fantasy convention. What’s more, I’m going to be there as a professional-type-person! I’ll be reading from Zeus Is Dead: A Monstrously Inconvenient Adventure, signing autographs, and serving on some of the conference panels.

I’m not entirely sure exactly which panels I’ll be on. That’s still being decided. What I can tell you is the reading will be at 1pm on Friday, April 3rd.

Oh, and George R.R. Martin will also be there, along with a bunch of exhibitors, awesome panels, and other professional weirdos just like me! That is, unless Martin slaughters us all. It could happen. The organizers have offered insurance.

It’s April 2nd through the 5th at the SeaTac Doubletree Hotel. Check out the Norwescon site for more conference information, grab some tickets, and come hang out with me and George R.R. Martin!

George R. R. Martin

He has no idea who I am!

Norwescon registration closes March 28th!

Want a free dark fantasy detective novella?

On the Matter of the Red Hand by J.M. Guillen

Incidentally, this cover was designed by Amalia Chitulescu, who also did the covers for A Shadow in the Flames and A Memory in the Black…

Hi everyone! This is just a quick post to let you know that dark fantasy author J.M. Guillen is currently letting e-copies of his novella, On the Matter of the Red Hand, go for free on Amazon!

I read this book about a year and a half ago, and I recommended it then when it wasn’t free, so now that you can get it at the push of a button, it’s even more worth your while. Set in “an intriguing pre-industrial setting filled with alchemy, guilds, and danger” (to quote my original review), On the Matter of the Red Hand introduces us to a class of detectives guided by an alchemical serum that gives both prophetic visions and waking nightmares.

Chocolate-Peanut Butter Fudge

December 24, 2014 By Michael G. Munz 2 Comments

Do you want fudge? Because this is how you get fudge.

Chocolate-peanut butter fudge, to be precise.

Chocolate-peanut butter fudge, to be precise.

I’m going to break from my blog’s usual format (such as it is – perhaps I should’ve put quotation marks around that word) and give you all a quick crash course in how to make some pretty decent fudge. Those of you who dislike fudge may move along.

Okay, now that that guy is gone, well, here we go! [Read more…]

12 Days of Christmas

December 11, 2014 By Michael G. Munz Leave a Comment

I realize I’m behind on getting up the next post in Michael Reads Percy Jackson, but it should be coming soon. (I’ve actually finished the book now, I just have to find time to write the posts.) In the meantime, here’s a rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas by Straight No Chaser that someone pointed me to yesterday after I complained that hearing anyone sing that entire song is truly an oppressive experience.

This made me laugh, so I figured I’d toss it up here…

I especially like the bit with the dreidel. But Toto is nice, too.

Poem: Santa’s Stalking You

December 7, 2014 By Michael G. Munz Leave a Comment

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Merry Christmas, everyone!

You can try to block the chimney
You can arc-weld shut the flue
But it won’t matter what you try
‘Cause Santa’s stalking you.

He sees you when you’re sleeping?
He knows when you’re awake?!
Just how many warning signs
Is it going to take?

He’s forcing all those elven slaves
To make you little gifts.
He bids you come sit on his lap,
It’d give him SUCH a “lift.”

We’ve tried to call the FBI,
There’s nothing they can do.
They say the big guy’s just a myth,
But Santa’s stalking you.
