Things are about wrapped up (though not quite) and we come to the all-important part of any epic quest story: the part where there is much celebrating, and everyone gets medals. In other words, it’s time for the twentieth chapter in Michael Reads Percy Jackson: The Last Olympian, a.k.a…

Bad Sci-Fi Theater: Judge Dredd (1995)
It’s about time for another Bad Sci-Fi Theater post! This time around, I put up the choice of movies for a vote on Twitter, and low and behold they declared that I must watch the first Judge Dredd movie from 1995. This tour de force of entertainment features Sylvester Stallone and that thespian of thespians who brought us not only Deuce Bigalo: Male Gigolo, but ALSO its sequel: Rob Schneider! (Okay, so I admit I laughed at the “Makin’ Copies” sketches on SNL back in the day, but I really can’t stand the guy. So thanks, Twitter. I owe ya one. 😉
So hey, here we go! [Read more…]
Michael Reads Percy Jackson: The Last Olympian – Ch 19
It’s time for a climax, complete with leg-crushing statues, aquatic cavalry, and not one but two last-minute side switches. In other words, it’s time for the 19th chapter of Michael Reads Percy Jackson: The Last Olympian…
We Trash the Eternal City
Book Review: The Secret History of Twin Peaks
Note: This review is spoiler-free until the marked section below…
Have I mentioned how grateful I am for Mark Frost’s involvement in Twin Peaks? He’s the co-creator who always seems to get short shrift alongside David Lynch any time the show is mentioned, but between the episodes of the show he wrote, the feel of the Fire Walk With Me movie (done without his involvement), and my love of his supernatural Victorian adventure novel The List of 7 (unconnected to Twin Peaks, a big favorite of mine–it’s a potboiler but no less fantastic for it), he’s a vital element of the show–at least, so far as I’m concerned. His particular style is all over the newly released The Secret History of Twin Peaks, which is a worthwhile read for anyone who’s a fan of the show. [Read more…]

Michael Reads Percy Jackson: The Last Olympian – Ch 18
Heads-up folks, I’m doing this one “live” as I read it, and I’m already frightened by the chapter title, Yep, it’s part eighteen of Michael Reads Percy Jackson: The Last Olympian…
My Parents Go Commando
Things aren’t looking good at the start, here. Clarisse is locked in ice, wounded lay everywhere… But there is some bright spot of hope, because the party-ponies are gone! Yaaay! (Okay, so I guess that’s kind of a bad thing for Percy, but I’m looking at the silver lining here.) 😀 [Read more…]
My Interview with Gears of War 4 Strategy Guide Writer Doug Walsh
At last summer’s PNWA writing conference here in Seattle, I found myself at dinner sitting next to Doug Walsh, a fellow writer who, like me, is also a gamer. Unlike me, he’s combined those two interests and has written official game guides for such popular games as Diablo 3, Saint’s Row IV, and the entire Bioshock series, among many others. (He’s also taller than me, has more hair, and looks vaguely like Patrick Dempsey, but massive envy aside, I liked him anyway.)
Being the self-serving guy that I am, I naturally asked him if he’d let me interview him for Geek Notes, and being the swell guy that he is, not only did he say yes, but he’s running a giveaway for some hardcopies of his newer guides. But more on that giveaway later. For now, meet Doug Walsh! [Read more…]
