Michael Reads Percy Jackson: The Sea of Monsters – Ch 10

In which we get the slightest glimpse of a centaur rave…

Dead people, donut people, and knots! All this and more in part ten of Michael Reads Percy Jackson: The Sea of Monsters…

We Hitch a Ride with Dead Confederates

This may be my favorite chapter so far! I got some hints at unknown mysteries, one of my favorite monsters (tied to a great concept), humor, and even a bit of emotional resonance.

Also, donuts! [Read more…]

Want a free dark fantasy detective novella?

On the Matter of the Red Hand by J.M. Guillen

Incidentally, this cover was designed by Amalia Chitulescu, who also did the covers for A Shadow in the Flames and A Memory in the Black…

Hi everyone! This is just a quick post to let you know that dark fantasy author J.M. Guillen is currently letting e-copies of his novella, On the Matter of the Red Hand, go for free on Amazon!

I read this book about a year and a half ago, and I recommended it then when it wasn’t free, so now that you can get it at the push of a button, it’s even more worth your while. Set in “an intriguing pre-industrial setting filled with alchemy, guilds, and danger” (to quote my original review), On the Matter of the Red Hand introduces us to a class of detectives guided by an alchemical serum that gives both prophetic visions and waking nightmares.

…I loved it. It was much better than Cats. I’m going to read it again, and again…

So two little things I predicted came true, and one big thing I predicted was more or less wrong. I’m going to say they balance out in this, the eighth part of Michael Reads Percy Jackson: The Sea of Monsters…

Michael Reads Percy Jackson: The Sea of Monsters – Ch 7

Chapter 7

Another fine chapter you’ve gotten us into, Riordan!

Percy cleans with fire, Hermes dashes in, and Tantalus becomes an even bigger prat—all this and more on the seventh part of Michael Reads Percy Jackson: The Sea of Monsters…

I Accept Gifts from a Stranger

Though lacking in much actual action, this chapter shoves us onto the flight deck, fuels up the jet, and clears us for launch. (Aren’t metaphors fun?) Midway through I found myself a little down on things, but then I realized I was resisting some of Riordan’s Greek mythology updates only because they contradicted with my own in Zeus Is Dead. Grover’s in a bad way, but those are the dangers of using Bugs Bunny’s “dress in drag to fool the hunter” trick. Or, to put it another way, it’s time for the sixth part of Michael Reads Percy Jackson: The Sea of Monsters…
