Book Review: The Kingdom by Cain S. Latrani

October 21, 2014 By Michael G. Munz Leave a Comment

From Goodreads: My review of Cain S. Latrani’s insane comedic fantasy, The Kingdom…

The KingdomThe Kingdom by Cain S. Latrani

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

If I may borrow from Forrest Gump (and that shows you how old *I* am), this book is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you’re gonna get. Each chapter of The Kingdom is a short story making up the larger whole, and each story contains things that are:

  • Laugh-out-loud hilarious
  • Absurd
  • Offensive (in a funny way)
  • Offensive (in a not-so-funny way)
  • Meta
  • Referential
  • Completely bonkers
  • Tacos

Michael Reads Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief (Ch 2)

October 19, 2014 By Michael G. Munz 3 Comments

Two comes after one.

Two comes after one!

Okay, so chalk up two gigantic marks on the “Michael Guessed Wrong” tally. Today I encounter overheard conversations, old women with dangerous shears, and likely centaurs in Rick Riordan’s The Lightning Thief, chapter two, a.k.a.:

Three Old Ladies Knit the Socks of Death

I’m a big fan of adding the suffix “of death” to pretty much anything. (Though I tend to prefer “-o-death” for a more festive bit of mortal danger…) I therefore liked this chapter right from the title. I was also pretty sure it meant we’d be seeing–or at least hearing about–the Fates (a.k.a. the Moirae). In Zeus Is Dead, the Fates were at once the most difficult and the most interesting characters for me to write, so I was eager to see how Riordan tackled them. [Read more…]

Michael Reads Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief (Ch 1)

(The full chapter title wouldn't fit in the image.)

(The full chapter title wouldn’t fit in the image.)

And so it begins. A simple field trip, pre-teen social stress, and confirmation of what we’ve all suspected: at least some of our math teachers are secretly bloodthirsty harpies just waiting for us to screw up so that they can kill us. All this and more in Rick Riordan’s The Lightning Thief, chapter one, a.k.a.:

I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-algebra Teacher

Michael Reads Percy Jackson: Starting Point

October 15, 2014 By Michael G. Munz 2 Comments

Are you excited? I'M excited! Also, I'm caffeinated. That's probably something, too.

Are you excited? I’M excited! Also, I’m caffeinated. That’s probably something, too.

So I’m all set to plunge into the first novel of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series, The Lightning Thief. (Here’s my intro blog post if you missed that one.) This will be the first time I’ve ever blogged my experience of reading a book, so I don’t know quite how quickly it will go, but I guess we’ll explore this together.

First, a few ground rules:

  1. NO SPOILERS! I want to experience the book as Riordan intended. The art of crafting how a story unfolds to a reader is something I’m passionate about. I’d hate to think of someone altering that experience for readers of my own novels, and I don’t see how I should hold myself to different standards when I’m reading. Comments are encouraged, but please leave them spoiler free – or at least blatantly spoiler-tagged to give me some warning.
  2. …Actually, there’s really only one ground rule, now that I think about it. But I’ve already typed the “2)” there, so, um, let’s see… Do NOT talk about Fight Club! Which actually makes me think of another rule…
  3. Talk about Michael Reads Percy Jackson as much as you want. Tell your friends if you like. And your family. And Rick Riordan if you know him. In fact, why not hit one of the “share” buttons down at the bottom right now? (Yeah, I’m shameless.)

Presenting Michael Reads…Percy Jackson!

October 14, 2014 By Michael G. Munz Leave a Comment

In my novel Zeus Is Dead: A Monstrously Inconvenient Adventure, I tackle the concept of Greek gods returning to the modern world, mining the concept for humor, adventure, satire, and general outrageous goofery. (Yeah, goofery is a word now. *flashes Creative License*) You may think it natural to assume that I have drawn inspiration from Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series, or that I’ve at least read it.

I’m often a very unnatural person. [Read more…]

Seattle’s Intergalactic Halloween Ball

October 14, 2014 By Michael G. Munz Leave a Comment

Are you going to be in Seattle on Friday, October 24th and looking for something awesome to do? Head to the Fred Wildlife Refuge (note – not an actual wildlife refuge) in the heart of Capitol Hill for the first Intergalactic Halloween Ball!

IntergalacticHalloweenBall1Brought to you by the excellent geek-folk at ScifiCommons.com and Seattle-based musician Aradia (whose geek credentials I can personally confirm), this will be an incredible Halloween party for everyone who loves sci-fi, fantasy, comics, steampunk, and just about anything else of a geek nature you can name! (I suggested they call it “Halloween Geek Bash 2014,” but admittedly I only thought of that suggestion after they’d picked a name. I also suggested the name “Irving,” but that would’ve just been ludicrous.)

In addition to the music, costumes, secret unannounced stuff, and general fun, a certain author you might know will also be there signing books for a small portion of the night. But mostly I’ll just be wandering around dressed like a zombified Tony Stark. Or, at least, that’s the plan…

Grab your tickets today, and join us all on October 24th!

Be there...AND be square!
