Farscape Rewatch: “Thanks for Sharing”

May 31, 2015 By Michael G. Munz Leave a Comment

Farscape

“Every frelling planet…”

Season 3, Episode 7:
“Thanks For Sharing”
***1/2  out of *****

“Cross my heart, smack me dead, stick a lobster on my head.”

All Crichton and the gang want is to buy some chromextin fluid to heal Talyn, but there’s obviously no way that’s going to go smoothly, and soon both Crichtons are caught up in some planetary politics with the ruling family and the Lobster-O-Truth. Also: A freaky-as-frell-looking red alien thingy. [Read more…]

Writing Update: A Dragon at the Gate

May 29, 2015 By Michael G. Munz Leave a Comment

It’s been a little while since I checked in with you folks to give a status update on A Dragon at the Gate. For those of you who’ve only come here for my Farscape rewatching or Percy Jackson reading, A Dragon at the Gate is the third and final book in my cyberpunk series known as The New Aeneid Cycle. Don’t let the “dragon” in the title fool you: this is sci-fi set in the mid-21st century.

A Dragon at the Gate

The dragon may be a metaphor.
Or it may not be…

Movie Review: Mad Max: Fury Road

May 23, 2015 By Michael G. Munz Leave a Comment

Mad Max: Fury Road (poster)

“And it exploded!”

Well holy flerking schnit, that was an awesome experience!

A couple of days ago I went to see Mad Max: Fury Road with a couple of friends. It was something of a spur-of-the-moment thing. I hadn’t originally been that excited for Fury Road. It was on my mental list of movies I’d probably see if I got around to it, but would likely end up renting. (Note that many movies on that mental-rental list—hee hee, rhyming!—are often forgotten between the time they’re in theaters and the time they’re available on DVD.) [Read more…]

Farscape Rewatch: “Eat Me”

May 17, 2015 By Michael G. Munz 4 Comments

Farscape

Farscape does horror, and Crichton is beside himself.

Season 3, Episode 6:
“Eat Me”
★★★★ out of ★★★★★

“I’ve never twinned a Luxan before.”
“Why me?”
“We’re going to make babies.”

And here we have one of my favorite episodes from the third season. My admiration for it comes from both the horror of the episode itself, and for what it sets up for the future. [Read more…]

Are you in the Seattle area? (Or even somewhere else with a burning desire to fly out to Seattle because what the heck why not and life is short?) Want to listen to me read from A Memory in the Black? Want to eat free cookies?? Then hold on to your butts, because May 28th just may be your lucky day…

May 28th, 7pm, at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park

May 28th, 7pm, at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park

Like I said, I’ll be reading from A Memory in the Black, the second novel in my sci-fi/cyberpunk series, in honor of its recent Booktrope re-release. Joining me will be fellow author (and recent Guest Geek) Camela Thompson, who will give you a taste of her supernatural thriller Blood, Spirit, & Bone, the latest novel in The Hunted series. And do you see that Space Needle made of bone tucked away on the cover of her first book there? It’s set in Seattle!

As those of you who’ve subscribed to my website mailing list already know, last week saw the first Geek Notes Giveaway contest. Only subscribers to the mailing list were eligible to enter, and I’m pleased to say that the winners were chosen last weekend. Congratulations to Mike and Joseph (winners of an e-copy of J.M. Guillen’s Rationality Zero), Linda and Herb (winners of an e-copy of Kenneth G. Bennett’s Exodus 2022), and Mary (winner of an autographed paperback of Exodus 2022)!

And yes, they have last names, but I mean it when I say that information given when subscribing to the list is not given out. In fact, some of them I don’t even know last names for myself…

Rationality Zero by J.M. GuillenExodus 2022 by Kenneth G. BennettOf course, since this was giveaway #1, that must mean that there will be a giveaway #2! (‘Cause I’m logical like that. I mean, ya know, sometimes.) Want to be eligible for the next giveaway? Be sure to sign up for the Geek Notes newsletter mailing list. You’ll even get a free copy of Mythed Connections right off the bat!

Farscape Rewatch: “…Different Destinations”

May 8, 2015 By Michael G. Munz Leave a Comment

Farscape

“I hope you weren’t planning on being happy anytime soon.” -This Episode

Season 3, Episode 5:
“…Different Destinations”
***1/2 out of *****

“Sub-officer Dacon. You are a soldier. A brave hero.”
“No. Heroes always get killed. I’ll be fine.”

Well, Zhaan’s dead, and things just keep getting worse and worse. At least, that’s the general theme of this episode. It’s cruel, and painful, and filled with the message that no matter what you try to do, you’re just going to screw it up. In a way, this episode is an embodiment of the anguished mental state that comes on the heels of tragedy. [Read more…]
