So this week I had my second ever podcast interview. (Click here if you missed the first one.) This time I got to hang out with John Adams, who runs the Super Awesome Geek Show! Now I know what you’re thinking: “Wait, ‘Super Awesome?’ How’d YOU get on THAT, Michael?”

You’ve got a lot of nerve, haven’t you? I’m not going to dignify that with an answer.

After a bit of talk about (of course) Zeus Is Dead and Booktrope, we geek out about other things like Farscape, Twin Peaks, and The Strain. Also cereal. Breakfast is important!

So once more, awesomebassador and fellow Booktrope author Tiffany Pitts–check out her novel Double Blind–has taken it upon herself to give me things to do. (If I don’t do what she says, bad things happen. It’s best if I not elaborate.) This time, it’s the Pacific Northwest Writers Blog Hop! So here I go…

1) What am I working on?

In terms of writing, I’m chipping away at the third novel in The New Aeneid Cycle, which is my cyberpunk series. It’s tentatively titled A Dragon at the Gate, and I hope to have it ready for publication by mid- to late-2015. I know people are eager to see how the series ends, especially after the final chapter of A Memory in the Black. [Read more…]

Discovering The Last Ship and The Strain

About two or three years ago I decided to give up cable TV. Ironically, this was right after I got a nice new HDTV. (I won’t go into the thought process there, but it was very logical, I assure you!) Syfy wasn’t doing much that was interesting anymore, and I didn’t really watch other channels enough to make paying for cable worth it. I kept a little broadcast deal so I could get the broadcast networks clear, but mostly I subsisted on Hulu and Netflix streaming. I missed some things – USA, for one (I’ve always liked Burn Notice, and liked watching Psych when I could). I’ve also wished, from time to time, that I had access to FX again.

But my point here is that I don’t have cable, and so I’ve missed out on seeing some interesting shows (despite catching many of them – The Walking Dead and Continuum to name a few – on Netflix or Amazon). I’ve recently started chipping away at that pile of missed TV, however, and caught up with both The Last Ship and The Strain. [Read more…]

A Shadow in the Flames re-release

I’m behind on my blogging duties, but it’s been for a good cause, I promise! For one, I’ve been working on writing more of A Dragon at the Gate. For another, I’ve been working with Booktrope to get my first novel, A Shadow in the Flames, ready to be re-published through them! No longer will it be a self-published novel. It’s great to have Booktrope throw in their support for ASITF.

For those of you who know me from my comedic fantasy novel Zeus Is Dead, you’ll find A Shadow in the Flames to be a different (but hopefully still enjoyable) experience. A sci-fi novel that some have called “cyberpunk but with more hope,” ASITF centers around Michael Flynn, a young man struggling to find his way in the urban, cybernetic violence of the mid-21st century. While it’s not a comedy, elements of my sense of humor do make an appearance at times, especially through the character of Felix Hiatt, a wise-cracking self-described “information bounty hunter” who features heavily in the novel. Finally, I’m back to blogging about Farscape! Based on my memory of it the first time it aired, I wasn’t looking forward to this one. I only saw it the one time, going so far as to skip it when showing the series to others. I know, I’m a bad man. Maybe that’s why it took me so long to get to it. (Not that I didn’t have other things on my plate…) I know some people regard this episode highly, so I was prepared to find it much better than I remembered. [Read more…]

A Dragon at the Gate (early excerpt!)

With all the work I’ve had to do amid the launch of Zeus Is Dead, it feels like it’s been months since I’ve been able to get any real work done on writing my current work-in-progress, the third and final installment of my sci-fi series The New Aeneid Cycle, tentatively titled A Dragon at the Gate. Yet this weekend I’m finally plunging back into it.

My first step: reacquaint myself with the characters and what I’ve written so far. I’m in the midst of re-reading the eleven chapters I’ve written thus far, and as I read Chapter Four it occurred to me that I could share an excerpt with all of you. [Read more…]

Hyper-Review: Guardians of the Galaxy

I’m going to make this review quick, and with one (marked & minor) exception, spoiler-free:

I saw Star Wars when I was 7 or 8, when it was re-released in theaters. I no longer remember at all my first viewing, or what it was like. 2/3rds of the way through Guardians of the Galaxy, I realized, “This is what watching Star Wars for the first time must have been like.” Amazing visuals, fantastic characters, a huge sense of fun in a big sci-fi/fantasy package. While I felt some of the character-bonding wasn’t quite earned, that’s a minor flaw, and easily forgiven.
