Writing Update: A Dragon at the Gate

January 16, 2015 By Michael G. Munz 2 Comments

A Dragon at the Gate

No one still really knows WHAT is in that ship.
That will change.

My writing on A Dragon at the Gate, the third and final book in The New Aeneid Cycle cyberpunk series, proceeds apace.

Wait, am I using that word correctly? *looks up “apace”* Hmm. “With speed?” “Quickly?” Let me start this over:

My writing on A Dragon at the Gate, the third and final book in The New Aeneid Cycle cyberpunk series, proceeds semi-apace! [Read more…]

A Shadow in the Flames: Now re-published and in paperback!

December 22, 2014 By Michael G. Munz 1 Comment

A Shadow in the Flames

Now available in paperback!

If I may quote Professor Farnesworth: “Good news, everyone!” This will be getting a little more press in the new year, but I’m excited and I wanted to share it with everyone: Booktrope (my publisher) has just officially re-published my first sci-fi novel (and my first novel, period), A Shadow in the Flames! My thoughts on Terminator: Genisys

December 17, 2014 By Michael G. Munz 8 Comments

Terminator: Genisys logo

Haven’t seen the trailer yet? It’s embedded at the bottom of this post…

I think I’d heard a while back that they were working on a new Terminator movie, but when the trailer for Terminator: Genisys (ugh, that Y—and the I, but mostly the Y!) debuted a couple of weeks ago, it took me by surprise. I thought the 4th Terminator film was just awful on a number of levels—it’s not part of my own “head-canon” for the series—so I suppose when I first heard about a T5, I just cringed and then pushed it from my mind.

And yet, after seeing the trailer, I can’t deny that I’m intrigued. Terminator: Genisys might actually have some potential (except that Y). I’ve been meaning to blog my thoughts on the trailer for a while, but with the Percy Jackson reading and other responsibilities, this is the first time I’ve had a chance. [Read more…]

Movie Review: Interstellar

November 8, 2014 By Michael G. Munz 4 Comments

scientifically realistic black hole depiction

Gargantua: Humanity’s new sun? It really is quite pretty.

Last night I saw Christopher Nolan’s latest, Interstellar, a film about a desperate mission through a black hole to find a new home for humanity before the Earth becomes uninhabitable. It’s mostly hard sci-fi, softened with a bit of metaphysics, but at its heart is a story about a father and his daughter. [Read more…]

Nolan’s “Interstellar”: Now with Realistic Black Holes!

November 4, 2014 By Michael G. Munz Leave a Comment

According to this article on Discovery.com, a black hole featured in Christopher Nolan’s new sci-fi film “Interstellar” will have the “best black hole in sci-fi.”

Nolan has consulted with Caltech physicist Kip Thorne, who provided a modern, scientific understanding of black hole theory via Einstein’s general relativity equations and the Black Hole Information Paradox.

Oh, and also the movie apparently stars Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, and comes out tomorrow, yadda-yadda-yadda…

Gaming: Rebel Galaxy

October 25, 2014 By Michael G. Munz Leave a Comment

Primitive but excellent.

Long, long ago, in the before-time, I got my first computer. It was 1990, and on my birthday my parents presented me with a state-of-the-art PC. It had an Intel 286 chip that could run at the whopping speed of TWELVE MEGAHERTZ! That was fast, for the time. It had no mouse, because the operating system was text-based (MS-DOS). It had no hard drive, because the OS booted into RAM from a floppy disk. A 5.25″ floppy disk. The monitor? 14 inches of amber monochrome awesome! It had a word processor, but being a 15 year old boy, I primarily used it for games. [Read more…]
