IGN Review: Pillars of Eternity

Hi everybody – I’m overdue for another post, both on the Farscape Rewatch and Michael Reads Percy Jackson front. Things have been busy preparing for the blog tour for the New Aeneid Cycle re-release, ECCC 2015 this weekend, and Norwescon the next.

I hope to have something new up soon, but in the meantime, take a look at this IGN video review of the just-released Pillars of Eternity. If you’re like me, you consider Baldur’s Gate 2 and Planescape: Torment some of the best PC RPG experiences ever, and the people behind PoE would seem to agree with us. As the IGN reviewer says, it “feels like Neil Gaiman is playing dungeon master.”

I haven’t had time to actually PLAY this yet, but I’m anxious to dive into it.

It’s Wednesday (or at least it is when this post is going up–the space-time continuum is confusing sometimes), which has come to mean it’s time for another Guest Geek post! Time flies. It’s been over a month since I posted my “first impressions” review of Dragon Age Inquisition, and I’m still playing it! Granted, I haven’t been playing it non-stop. Work, writing, blogging, reading, sleep, and the necessity of interacting with other human beings have to get some time, too. Game Review – Dragon Age: Inquisition (first impressions)

TL;DR: Not without issues, but worth playing so far!

I really had intended to let this game simmer out there in the world for a while before picking it up. I really did. I pegged Dragon Age: Origins for one of my Top 5 PC Games of the Last Five Years–a taste of an RPG style we hadn’t seen since the days of Baldur’s Gate 2. Dragon Age 2…well, it disappointed me and a lot of other people. The tactical aspects were blunted, the maps were cloned all over the place, and the story put you in charge of a character cursed with the inability to have much of any effect on the world. That’s not to say I hated DA2. I enjoyed it enough to play it through with at least two different characters. But it was a step down from its predecessor. [Read more…]

Top 5 List: Recent PC Games

Top Five PC Games of the Last Five Years

As with all of these lists, this is only my own opinion. I haven’t played every single game that’s been released, and my tastes are sometimes a bit odd. You’ll find no MMOs on this list, and–much to the surprise of some, I’m sure–no Bioshock: Infinite. (I liked the original Bioshock, and Infinite’s story was interesting, but its gameplay just didn’t hold my interest for whatever reason. I know, I’m a dirty heathen.) Gaming: Rebel Galaxy

Primitive but excellent.

Long, long ago, in the before-time, I got my first computer. It was 1990, and on my birthday my parents presented me with a state-of-the-art PC. It had an Intel 286 chip that could run at the whopping speed of TWELVE MEGAHERTZ! That was fast, for the time. It had no mouse, because the operating system was text-based (MS-DOS). It had no hard drive, because the OS booted into RAM from a floppy disk. A 5.25″ floppy disk. The monitor? 14 inches of amber monochrome awesome!
